Flag Combaton: The dojo version of Combaton, the martial art team sport

Overview

All ages, male and female, can play this team game, and it is a great cardio workout while developing kicking skills, timing, speed and dexterity in utilizing the passing of the baton and scoring on the kick bag. But most of all, Flag Combaton can inject new enthusiasm into the school curriculum by creating a team atmosphere.

Objective of Game

The object of the game is for the offense, which has possession of the baton, to score on their opponent’s goal (kick bag) without having a flag pulled from their belt.

The defense must stop the baton carrier by pulling free one of the three flags on the baton carrier’s belt before he or she scores.

Scoring results when the baton carrier for an offense kicks their opponent’s bag solidly with a martial arts kick.

Each game is 5 minutes, and the clock stops only if there is a score or a time out or a foul is called.

Equipment Needed

2 wave master kick bags

1 baton

1 whistle

1 timer clock or stop watch

4 to 6 flag belts – each belt has three pull flags

The Flag Belts

The flag belts are designed so that one flag can be pulled at a time, as opposed to the flag belts that are one piece and disconnect the whole belt.

The problem with whole flag belts is that a player may have their flag pulled inadvertently when they do not have the baton in hand, which stops the game unnecessarily. Play must stop while the player reattaches his belt, which stymies the momentum and flow of the game.

*Players are encouraged to support the referee by confirming a call. This helps to instill the martial arts code of conduct by being honest and act with integrity.

Layout

Each kicking bag is placed at each end of the room, but with enough room behind it so that players can come in and around the bag for the best angle of attack. This should take up most of the workout space in the school.

Scoring

The baton carrier (known in combaton as the “shooter”) can score with three different types of kicks:

3 point score is any standing kick with the support leg still on the floor

4 point score with any jumping kick

5 point score with any 360 degree jumping spin kick on the bag

The kicks must be hard or solid enough to rock the bag.

Teams

Teams can be 2 on 2 or 3 on 3, depending on the size of the school.

Match up the teams so that both are balanced in relation to size and ability.

The two basic age groups are 14 and under, and 15 and over.

It can be gender based or co-ed.

Officials

One or more officials are needed to blow the whistle to start and stop the attacks. The official is usually the instructor and/or assistant instructor. Two officials offer the best coverage. Each should have a whistle, while one keeps score and the other manages the clock.

The official will blow the whistle:

* When a flag has been pulled from the belt of the baton carrier

* When there is a score on the goal

* When there is a timeout

* When there is simultaneous possession

Game Details

Each game is 5 minutes in length

The clock stops when there is a score or time out or a foul called

Each team gets one 10 second time out

Each team gets one warning for foul play

A coin toss can determine who starts first with offense.

Offense gets a total of four attacks when starting a game or after a score. An Opening Attack, then three attacks (plays). Opening Attacks are used only to start the game or after a team scores. If a team does not score and the baton is turned over to the other team, then that team has three attacks in which to score.

The Opening Attack requires players to begin the game by touching their goal (kick bag) on their side of the field. This is to make sure that the players are locked into position before the whistle blows to begin.

The official blows the whistle to start the attack, and the clock begins.

If the offense scores, then the official states if it was a 3, 4 or 5 point kick. The teams reset for an Opening Attack with the other team getting possession of the baton.

If the offense does not score, then the baton is turned over to the defense where the last stop was made. This point on the field establishes the line of scrimmage. Now the defense becomes the offense and has three attacks in which to score on their opponent’s goal.

The Baton

The baton can be thrown or handed off as many times as necessary.

If the baton touches any player before touching the ground, it is live and play continues.

If the baton does not touch any player before hitting the ground, the baton is dead and the play stops.

Usage of the Hands

Players can stiff arm their opponent, but not to the face.

There is no forcible pushing and pulling on their opponent.

However, arm and hand extension for balance and maneuvering is acceptable.

Line of Scrimmage

If the offense does not make it past the mid-field line, then the point where they were last stopped will establish the line of scrimmage for the next attack to take place.

If the offense moves past the mid-field line during their attack, then they must reset each subsequent attack at that line, if they do not score. This is to allow enough space for players to maneuver for the best angles of attack.

If however, the defense backs the offense farther behind the mid-field line, then that becomes the new line of scrimmage.

Simultaneous Possession

If two opposing players have possession of the baton at the same time for two seconds, then the official blows the whistle, stops the clock, and calls “Simultaneous Possession”.

Similar to a jump-ball in basketball, the two players go to the nearest goal (kick bag). Each player is on one side of the bag. The official sets them up and instructs them on procedure.

The player with the fastest round-house kick to the bag wins. The official says “go” or blows the whistle to initiate.

If the players tie after 3 attempts, then they must shift position by jumping and reversing their front foot to the back foot, then kick. This added movement will usually give enough separation to determine a winner.

Tie - Overtime

If the game ends in a tie, then overtime will take place. Each team gets one attempt with 2 offensive players against 1 defensive player. The offense begins at the mid-field line.

If the offensive players score, say, a 4 point kick, then the other team gets an offensive attempt with two players against one. In this case, they will have to score at least a 4 point kick on the bag to continue the game, or to win with a 5 point kick. This will continue until a winner is determined, rotating the players at the defensive position.

Fouls and Penalties

Each team gets 1 warning. After that teams will be assessed a penalty for a foul.

Penalties

* 1 or 2 points given to the other team

* Player removed from the game for 2 plays

Fouls

* Bad behavior unbecoming for a martial artist

o Unacceptable language

o Unnecessary roughness

o Arguing with the official

Penalty: 2 points given to the other team and player removed for 2 plays

* Pushing, Pulling, Holding, Tripping

Penalty: 1 point given to the other team

Longtime ComBATON coach/players DC Turnbull "The Real Deal" and CJ Vickers "Mr Smooth" are hosting the first Orlando area martial arts tournament of 2011 on January 8th in Orlando.

Events include: Breaking, Forms, Weapons & Sparring. This tournament is NON-sanctioned so anyone can compete and anyone can coach. There will be awards for 1st - 4th place in all events. The cost for 1 - 2 events is $45 and an additional $5 per event will be charged for additional events. This event is hosted by DC Turnbull and CJ Vickers of DC Turnbull Martial Arts. There is a small late registration for the day of the event.

Members of the Tae Kwon Do Club at UCF

PRLog (Press Release) – Aug 29, 2010 – The Tae Kwon Do Club at UCF hosted Martial Artists Fighting Hunger's 2010 Challenge Saturday, an athletic skill competition event. Martial artists of all ages and levels participated in the event in which athletes were timed in a sequence of challenges. The contestant with the fastest time overall won.

Once the officials started the timers, the contestants raced through 6 phases of skill testing: accuracy, agility, kicking accuracy, take-downs, jumping and speed.

There were 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies for the contestants in each division. There were six divisions, starting with ages 5 thru 7 up through the over 40 group. Seperate awards were given for males and females in each division until the Grand Championship. All participants will got a free t-shirt sponsored by Logos Promote.

Karate Depot, Tan Dao Kung Fu, comBATON, Jackie Detaille and others donated some great prizes and an iPod Touch was raffled off. There were other goodies as well.

The overall Grand Champion was Colton Blake of the 14-17 year olds who bested last year's Grand Champion, 21 year old CJ Vickers by one-tenth of a second. Colton won a $25.00 Olive Garden gift certificate, a chest protector and a backpack, all donated by comBATON as well as a sparring gear set donated by Karate Depot. He will also receive a Tiger Claw Kung Fu DVD donated by Tan Dao Kung Fu. Colton is student at Richard Hoehn's MMAT Academy in Winter Springs, Florida.

The Division winners were given a choice of a backpack or chest protector donated by comBATON. They also received trophies. Competition was fierce and several competitors won by less than a second. The winners were:

Martial Artists Fighting Hunger thanks the Taekwondo Club at UCF, the donors, the volunteers and the officials for making this event a success. September is Hunger Action Month and we kicked it off a little early to avoid competing with the football season as many of our competitiors are multi-sport athletes. Hunger Action month comes around in September and Martial Artists Fighting Hunger isn’t waiting. Last year the group hosted food drives for Lake Cares Food Bank and Second Harvest Food Bank. This year the group plans an encore with the TaeKwonDo Club at UCF hosting the event. As it was last year, there will be a series of martial arts challenges and a winner will emerge.

What is different this year are the prizes. ComBATON donated an iPod Touch to be raffled off. That was quickly followed by Karate Depot donating several generous fitness-themed prizes for contestants. There will be temporary tattoos for the kids and fun for all. The event will be held on the UCF campus and will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

The cost of participation is a donation of 2 cans of food and $5.00. The challenge will be held on August 28, 2010 from 9 am until 3 pm. The public is invited.

2010 Season Tournament Season

Combaton is restructuring the business model in order to have an effective expansion plan to lay the groundwork for future professional teams. There will be a Tournament of Games in August of 2010. Our approach this year while we are restructuring is to have an open call for anyone wanting to participate in comBATON.

Players will be mixed and match according to age and weight. This will give those who have no experience the opportunity to play with those who do.

Before the tournament begins, there will be seminars explaining each facet of the game to players.

In addition, there will be a combine similar to what the the NFL does, but oriented to the martial artist. This will be a competition in which athletes are competing against themselves but also against the clock. The winner will be the fastest time.

The comBATON combine will also be used in future comBATON competitions to measure the athletic ability of the player for the pre-pro all star team

Allen's Martial Arts Holds Scrimmage

ComBATON Officials Director Paul Allen, along with his wife, Ginger and son, Gabe, recently held a martial arts scrimmage at the RDV Complex in Maitland, Florida. The Allen family is unique in that all three members hold the rank of martial arts master. They were assisted by Master David Turnbull of DC Turnbull Martial Arts and other AAU TaeKwonDo officials. Master Turnbull is pictured above coaching two youngsters in the finer points of sparring.

A scrimmage is a more relaxed atmosphere than a tournament that combines competition with training. Many of the younger students are inexperienced in competition and gained valuable experience. This training approach has proved successful in the past with many participants placing in AAU State and National competition.

The RDV Complex is a state of the art training facility and gym. It is also the corporate home and training center for the Orlando Magic. The Allens teach martial arts classes at the center. ComBATON commission Steve Blanton attended and was impressed by the venue. He plans to place the RDV Complex on his short list of good venues for comBATON tournaments.

Bill Wisotsky of New York State is comBATON's newest state director. He has a background in SHIMA Jiu-jitsu, wrestling and American Kempo Karate. Bill's interest in reality training has also led him to train in the Russian Martial Art of Systema and V-FORCE Scientific Fighting Concepts. He also owns Long Island Mixed Martial Arts, a multi-disciplinary organization focused on brining all different martial artists together to learn, share and attend each others events. We're glad to have him on board.

National Director Opens New School

ComBATON National Director Master David Turnbull recently opened a new martial arts school in Sanford, Fl at 1662 W. Airport Blvd. Originally hailing from Ohio, Turnbull was the Ohio Athlete of the Year and All American College wrestler before embarking into Asian martial arts. He has a long history in the martial arts and received the AAU David Rivens National Award for his work at the state and national level. Call the school at 321-356-9299 for additional information.

New French and European Director

Jacky Detaille, a native of Belgium living in France, is comBATON's new European Director. His immediate plans include setting up a local league("le gard") in France and expanding into Belgium.

Jacky learned of comBATON by seeing videos on YouTube and was very interested in the concept. Jacky still competes and is interested in multiple opponent sparring. More information will be coming in the comBATON newlsetter soon.

The Lake Mary comBATON Samurai got together for some goal pole kicking practice and a photoshoot last month. Master Wendi of 2 Dog Photography got some great pictures. Some pics from the photoshoot are posted our Facebook page and on our MySpace page.

The demographics of the typical viewer are 82% male and 18% female. Fifty-five percent of the viewers fall between the ages of 13-35 with and additional 35% between 35 and 44. The remaining 10% are 45 and up.

The most interesting thing about this audience is how they discovered the video. One hundred percent of the discovery of this video in Seychelles was by instant messaging and e-mail.

The game video of the Championships at the Disney Martial Arts Festival will be mailed to the coaches as soon as it comes out next week. Video Solutions of Lake County is making copies. Bruce, the owner, says that there is so much footage that it takes 20 minutes to burn each copy using his professional equipment. He's loaded up with other projects but will be working on ours too. Hopefully Steve will be able to get copies out very soon.

When you see it, think about what you think the best plays were. Steve and Bruce will also work on making a new video for comBATON.com. The next video will not have a commercial at the end but will be more like a highlight reel. We'll be looking at to get ideas for improving the game also. E-mail Steve and let him know what you like (and don't like.)

Due to the time it takes to make copies, teams will need to make and distribute copies of the one sent to the coaches. Steve will also see if the file sizes can be reduced so we can edit them. They are HUGE and my computer started asking me to delete PROGRAMS to make room to work with them. I deleted as much as I could and the files were still too big.

Dr Robyn is a child development specialist who is well known for her character education programs. The SuperShow exceeded our expectations. We had a lot of interested school owners and instructors come by our booth. Many attendees had read about us in the event program and sought us out. We were also able to attend networking events and seminars that will be useful in the months to come.

Bill Wallace was awarded a life time acheivement award for his work in the martial arts. He gave a speech and was a visible presence during the show. He was patient with everyone who wanted a photo taken with him.

Master Wendi Turnbull of 2 Dog Photography got a lot of photographs as well. Master Paul Allen designed an awesome brochure that we distributed using her photographs.

Ginger, Paul and Gabe Allen helped staff the booth as well as David and Wendi Turnbull. CJ Vickers, Kitty and Steve rounded out the team. At the end of the 4 day show, we were worn out but happy. We hope to attend this event next year in Los Vegas.

We're looking forward to the MAIA SuperShow in Orlando and to meeting the other exhibitors. There will be a host of seminars and presentations. The entire spectrum of the martial arts sphere will be represented from publishers to mixed martial arts schools. The traditional martial arts schools will be out in force too. We're looking forward to introducing comBATION to a whole new audience. Master Paul Allen is working on an AWESOME brochure we'll be handing out. This is a great time in the martial arts!

Regis Lima will be opening a new location in Spring Hill, Fl in May. More information will be coming as the school's Grand Opening approaches. Master Lima will be the host of the next (date to be announced) comBATON Tournament of Games. People will be coming from all over the country for interactive seminars with Ricardo Liborio, Matt Hughes, Bill Wallace and Richard Bustillo among others. comBATON as a Discpline

As you know, comBATON will be considered a discipline at our final Tournament of Games in 2008. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase what comBATON is all about. Growing a new sport is a lot of work but advancements such as this make it all worthwhile.

The Rest of the 2008 Season

The date of third of the trilogy of the 2008 Tournament of Games will be rescheduled for the fall. The actual date will be announced in July. The season will be capped off by a final Tournament of Games In October. More details will be announced in the newsletter to come out early next week.

This change was necessary for a number of factors. There were far more new tournaments held this year that were not announced when we planned the season. Because our players and coaches are involved with officiating tournaments as well as comBATON, everyone was out of town every weekend with no chance to rest. Also many of our players are competing in state and national compeitions and need this time to train.

We are looking to continued growth of the sport as the season finishes. The players are already planning new plays to beat the competition. Personally, I can't wait.

There are now MySpace pages for the teams. Although anyone can look at the pages, you must have an account to send messages or make comments. comBATON has a MySpace page as well. If you send an ADD request, please indicate who you are so I can put you in the "Top Friends." It is sometimes impossible to figure out who people are by looking at your pages and we do get friend requests from non-players. She is the official comBATON photographer and very good at what she does. She took this pic of the Adult Women's Division at the Miami area games. She excels at action shots, I just don't have one at my fingertips to post. You can see a few of her action shots on the comBATON website.

Note that a "Goal Pole Kicking Contest" was added as a "hot link" today. The winner gets a trophy and $50.00 in cash. Follow the link to get the details. Three clips of the games in Hollywood (Adult women's, demo of kids, and the promo clip)have been featured in Dabble.com's top 24 videos of the last 24 hours in the last 3 days. The game was highlighted on a popular internet sports webpage which created a surge of visitors to the website and copycat postings of the article.

comBATON Tournament of Games January 12, 2008

comBATON's first Tournament of Games will be held at McArthur High School in Hollywood, Florida on January 12th, 2008. The Tournament of Games Host is Master DeJesus of DeJesus Taekwondo in Hudson, Fl. Tickets are selling online through the comBATON website. By purchasing your tickets online, you will be able to walk right in and enjoy the pre-game entertainment. You don't want to miss the opening. There is a link on the right.

There will be a dance contest held between games and a cash prize will be awarded to the best dancer or couple. So dust off your dancing moves and get out there!

Hollywood is located in the northern Miami area and gulf beaches are nearby. A link to the reasonably priced El Palacio Sports Hotel and Conference Center is provided and there are many things to do for a family choosing to spend the weekend in this tropical paradise. Note that kids stay free at the El Palacio. Information about Miami area activities is posted on the hotel website.

Competing teams include the Port Richey Spartans of Regis Lima Martial Arts, the Hudson Tigers of DeJesus Taekwondo, the Lake Mary Samuari of DC Turnbull TKD and the Spring Hill Ninja of Brian Schneider's "Underground" TKD.

New 3 vs 3 Sport 'comBATON' Mixes Karate Football Judo and Rugby
I have no doubt that this will be an Olympic Sport before 2010! Some genious took Karate and fused it with American football. In this example, a team of 3 vs 3 use all standard Karate rules, with a bit of Ju Jitsui thrown in, to battle for possession of a Baton. The baton basically replaces the football that is used in American Football. Unique!

Kitty put an approximately 5 minute Combaton video together today using professional footage from the tournament demo at Mt. Dora Middle School in Spring 2007. Due to technical problems (unable to convert format to JPEG2), it won't go out tonight.

Look for it soon. Basically, it tells the story a game from the beginning to the first scored goal. The footage was filmed using two cameras and she only used the close-ups and tighter shots. At the beginning the players are clearly recognizable.

When complete, it will go out on YouTube and My Space Videos on the same day.

I'll bet that some of you players have good close up shots doing a great kick or play. So far it's just by chance that the close ups are of random martial artists. Let's get some of you out there!
