ComBATON Officials Director Paul Allen, along with his wife, Ginger and son, Gabe, recently held a martial arts scrimmage at the RDV Complex in Maitland, Florida. The Allen family is unique in that all three members hold the rank of martial arts master. They were assisted by Master David Turnbull of DC Turnbull Martial Arts and other AAU TaeKwonDo officials. Master Turnbull is pictured above coaching two youngsters in the finer points of sparring.
A scrimmage is a more relaxed atmosphere than a tournament that combines competition with training. Many of the younger students are inexperienced in competition and gained valuable experience. This training approach has proved successful in the past with many participants placing in AAU State and National competition.
The RDV Complex is a state of the art training facility and gym. It is also the corporate home and training center for the Orlando Magic. The Allens teach martial arts classes at the center. ComBATON commission Steve Blanton attended and was impressed by the venue. He plans to place the RDV Complex on his short list of good venues for comBATON tournaments.
